The Odd Occurrences of Slumber Grove
The Hook! The Odd Occurrences of Slumber Grove
At the dawn of the millennium, the sleepy mountain town of Slumber Grove is experiencing a series of odd occurrences that are beginning to shake this little town to its core. Overlooking the beautiful and mysterious Lake Chipapoke, and situated down the mountain from the restricted and eerily abandoned town of Old Mayberry—closed to the public after a mysterious church fire in the mid-50s ignited the coal mines below—Slumber Grove is becoming a nexus for paranormal activity.
Paranormal sightings are on the rise, prompting a group of high school students to form a new school club. This paranormal society, led by the enigmatic and knowledgeable history teacher Mr. Giger, is quickly growing as more students join in their quest to uncover the truth. Mr. Giger, with his deep interest in the supernatural, is determined to understand the strange occurrences happening around town.
For their first mission, Mr. Giger tasks his team with investigating a chilling local legend about a haunted covered bridge. The story tells of a woman who, in a fit of despair, drowned her baby at the bridge many years ago. Mr. Giger's recent reports suggest that something unusual is happening with this haunting—something that deviates from the usual spectral manifestations. He believes that a spirit at the bridge is in the process of becoming what he calls a "Flicker." This term, coined by Mr. Giger, describes spirits that are in the metamorphosis stage of becoming Shadow People, flickering in and out of the shadows.
With a mixture of excitement and trepidation, the team sets off into the local countryside to investigate the haunted bridge. Armed with flashlights, recording devices, and a mix of skepticism and belief, they prepare to confront whatever lies in wait. What horrors will befall them at the bridge? Will they uncover the truth behind the ghostly legend, or will they themselves become part of Slumber Grove's dark history?
As the night deepens and the air grows colder, the students realize that some stories hold more truth—and more terror—than they ever imagined.
I have an idea for a text-based role-playing game that combines elements of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Stranger Things. The setting will revolve around a group of middle school and high school characters, with a few adults mixed in. Players can choose to portray either middle or high school kids. The game will be run using the BESM 4th edition system, featuring a rules-light approach and a slow character progression where initial capabilities are limited.
Character advancement will be tied to roleplaying actions. For instance, regular training in swordplay or fighting will improve combat skills, while studying or practicing witchcraft can lead to the development of magical abilities.
I plan to incorporate AI for some NPC characters to enhance the storytelling experience. To facilitate gameplay, I am considering using RPoL for the role-playing forums and dice rollers. This platform is mobile-friendly, allowing players to check and respond daily, keeping the game active and engaging throughout the year. Additionally, we can schedule in-person game nights for important missions where everyone can participate simultaneously on RPoL.
