OOC Clone Talk

This is where you can have your out of character discussions.

Let us know if you will be out of town (or send a PM to the Computer) or anything else you want to share with the community.

Update

I'm still waiting to see if two more people want to join who previously expressed interest.  Otherwise, I'm going to get you going soon.  If you haven't done so already, please let me know if you really have a hankering to create your own character in detail (recommended at this point only for experienced players).  Otherwise, I will be assigning premade ones to balance things out.

...but I'm good either way.  Remember, if all your clones die, you will get to watch your new self germinate and develop in a tank anyway (and thus get to create your own character later).

Re: Update

As you look over your character, you will probably have many questions.  If the questions are about any of the following, POST THE QUESTION IN YOUR SPECIAL PRIVATE THREAD, NOT IN THE PUBLIC THREAD:

Your secret society (or its instructions)
Your mutation
Your Secret Skills

and any special instructions you may have received (such as which of your companions you're supposed to spy on, etc.)

EVERYTHING LISTED BELOW "open slots for narrow specialties" IS CONSIDERED YOUR SECRET INFORMATION.  Check your character sheet accordingly.

Re: Update

What YOU need to do:

1- Look at your character carefully.  Ask questions (I know there will be many at this point and will get to them one at a time).

2- Pick a second tic.  Once chosen, you will get 10 extra perversity points

3- Choose 2 narrow specialties.  If you don't know what these are, don't worry.  We'll get to that and you can choose later.

Re: Update

I'm keeping track of things.  I don't give a point every time a tic is used or anything, but proportionately, those who use tics more, those who have innovative solutions, those who fulfill mission or secret society goals, and those who get others to do the dangerous stuff...those kinds of issues...that's what overall gets the most perversity points.  Creative use of a tic will almost always result in points.

In reading the rules, it says to award them at the end of the scene, so I'm going to try sticking to that mostly...

Some of you have noticed that you have two narrow specialty slots that are blank.  These are for you to fill in.  You tell me what you want them to be whenever you get inspiration along the course of the adventure.  Now or later.

Also, please ignore the credits listed for your characters.  That was the pregenerated character amount, I think deducting for your normal equipment.  Just change it to 1000 credits.

TO PROSPECTIVE PLAYERS WHO CANNOT JOIN US:  Please check back frequently.  If we lose players, I will announce it in this thread.

I will assign you your characters this weekend, and we will resume the game next week.

I decided to add 4 players instead of 2, but unfortunately I still cannot accommodate all the requests to join.

For those just joining us, you can have your character start in any of the three rooms you want:

The Workshop, where the warscrubber currently is.

The Reactor Room, where there are reactors that might not take kindly to being fired upon unless you want to take a Chernobyl bubble bath

And the storage room, where Ginger ran to and where there are various boxes of things which will take you a bit of time to go to.

REPEAT OF RULE:
(Focusing on getting ahead means you can choose to roll against the skill the guide did not choose, or against a narrow specialty if you show it applies.  If you succeed, you add your success margin to your maneuver roll.  If you fail, you don't add anything.)

So if I'm flying and shooting, do I roll three times?
1) maneuver roll (basic d20 roll against no skill, higher is better)
2) relevant skill roll for the guide's choice
3) skill roll for shooting

??
I don't understand, so I'm probably doing it wrong.

Re: PROSPECTIVE PLAYERS

If you are in the lead, you don't need to use the "catch up" action and you would just be attacking or using a mutation.

If you are not in the lead, you can use "catch up" as your action.  Then you can roll again against the opposite skill chosen by the leader and add whatever you make the roll by to the roll for the initial maneuver.

The "maneuver" roll IS the roll against the skill chosen by the guide.  (For the first move, it wasn't because there was no leader/action, but for the rest that roll is the maneuver roll.)

So for "movement," you roll once or twice.  You roll once for your "maneuver" roll, which is a roll against whatever the guide chose.  If your action is to catch up, then you roll a second time to help your score on the maneuver roll.

If you choose to attack instead, then you roll for that instead of to "catch up."

OOC:  You can make all rolls yourself, and even tell me in the private line by what margin you made the roll, and you can also add your PP points to the roll (but let me know all details).  You just can't post the actual "success" or "failure" of the roll because PP points might apply to change whether you actually succeeded or failed...and also the margin of failure can create other..."unexpected"...effects that the GM posts.

So ideally, I might see something like this:

<private to GM Computer Heath> 16:41, Today: Ginger rolled 8 using 1d20. Maneuver roll against violence.
Violence score: 7.
Margin: 1 + 5 PP points as previously posted= 6

Today: Ginger rolled 1 using 1d20. Action: Get ahead.
Hardware score: 10.
Margin: 9.

Total margin for maneuver roll: 15!>

If you have 0 or less margin on the get ahead roll, it stays at 0 (neither helping nor hurting you).

Re: PROSPECTIVE PLAYERS

Since you want your skill to be as high as possible, the lower roll is the better roll when rolling against skills.  (Granted, sometimes, rolling against each other makes a high number better...I'm trying to work out that kink.)

I.e., a roll of your skill level or lower is a success.

Friend Citizen, I do hope you are not trying to point out that the Computer has made any errors mistakes glitches.

OOC: Actually, I might have made a mistake here or there on this point, as I'm used to the high roll wins d20 system.

I will begin processing new characters for the new people and those who want new characters.

Please tell me in your special thread or through a private line any special things you did during the last adventure that warrants merit...such as fulfilling your secret society missions, your mandatory bonus duties, etc.  No need to be super specific, just remind me before I hand out awards and credits as the last part of the last adventure...not to mention the "corrections" for Gunther's wonderful stab in the back accusation.  :)

The next adventure should be rather short in comparison with the first one...in that most of it all occurs in one room.  The adventures are listed as 1 session (2-3 hours) or 2 sessions (4-6 hours).  This is a short 2-3 hour one in the book.

I think the one we just did would be something like three sessions...or four.

For you newcomers, putting together your characters takes a lot of typing and explanation.  I've got two of you typed up, and more to come, but I'm not going to give them out until I've double checked that they all have a good cross-goal of going after someone else in your group.

Also, the intro to this is rather long (but interesting!), so I'm getting to it as I can.

I was driving for about 16 hours between Sunday and yesterday, and then worked a full day yesterday and more than a full day today...just to get up to speed with real life outside the COmputer.  Just wanted you to know that I'm not ignoring the game.  IN fact, the Computer needs to allocate me more real life time to focus on more non-real life activities.

As I'm adding your new characters, some of you may realize you're in the same group as another character.  (There are only so many groups, so that's just a known evil to deal with.)  If that is the case, you are in the group of a character who is not returning for the next adventure (or who has chosen a different character).  Rather than deleting the entire threads, I just let it be.  So just ignore their personal threads if that is the case.

I did make one mistake, which was since corrected.

I have a question about perversity points.

Is it possible that in trying to help a roll you make it exceed the target thus causing bad things to happen, even though you were trying to help the roll?

Re: Follow Up

Theoretically, yes.  But for me, a success is a success.  The main danger with too much success relates to the tension level.

As a reminder, the tension level shows how closely The Computer is monitoring your actions.  Ideally, the Computer would monitor all actions, but resources don't permit it, though you have a pretty good idea of how closely you are being monitored at any given time (hence, I tell you the "tension level" of each room).

For example, if it is tension level 3, and you roll a 6 but used 5 perversity points, you have now gone down to a 1, which is within the tension level (rolling 3 or lower).  Thus, you have attracted the attention of the Computer with your action.  If your action can be deemed treasonous in any way, SOMEBODY has seen it, whether a secret society member, IntSec, or the Computer itself.  It then becomes evidence against you.  If it is a secret society member and you just succeeded at something your secret society wants, then tension level can act to help for a promotion for you.

It goes both ways.

Is anyone interested in starting a new Paranoia adventure?  If so, let me know.

Re: New players

I had entirely forgotten this game existed. I'll have to go through it again, as I have no idea what's going on anymore. But yeah, I'm probably up for a restart.

Re: New players

No need to go through anything really.  It would be a brand new game from scratch, though you could keep your old characters.  The game's been dead for awhile.

Re: New players

I'd like to make my own character. I got put in as a replacement to an old one. If we decide to revamp, I'll do a revamp as well.

Re: New players

No rush.  I have several adventures, and had a fun original one in mind, that I never got to run.  I'm trying to think of ways to streamline the action for RPoL to make it easier to run.

Re: New players

We are considering reopening this game after The Computer reboots.  Please PM if anyone has interest in rejoining for a new adventure.  If there's enough interest and I can be sure I have time to run it in a way that The Computer will approve of without sending anyone to the Euthanasia Department, then I will reopen it.

Old players and new are both welcome.

Re: New players

Okay, we're up to 3 people now.  I'd like to hit 5 or 6 to make it official.

Goal would be to start at the beginning of the new year.

Most likely you would be assigned characters unless you know the system and want to create them yourself.  (The Computer may grant you the luxury of choosing your own name, if you promise to swear allegience.)

Exciting! Either way is fine. It's fun getting a name assigned.

Re: New players

For those like you who had past characters, I was planning on just carrying your characters forward unless you want a new one for some reason.  (You can change the first name if you want.)  So it would be the same character who knows whatever awful things transpired in the Euthanasia Department where we last left our characters, along with some new victims clones.

Re: New players

I have been giving this a little thought, and this is what I've decided to do:

The first adventure will be run Straight style.  This means a little more serious like a typical RPG adventure.  (Of course, you can still be silly and funny, and I will continue to post with the same wry humor.)  After that, we will return to the more Classic/Zap style.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU:

I do this for newcomers to more easily adapt to the rules and for oldtimers to refamiliarize themselves.  You will not have to worry about things like accusations of treason.  The Computer will be blinded to your actions as well.

But this gives us a chance to develop a sense of the secret societies, a sense of "paranoia," and an environment where the troubleshooters can actually cooperate as a team before going at each other's throats in the next adventure.

So I will be introducing you to the game rules by baby steps--not that there are any babies in Alpha Complex.  That would be treason.

If possible, let's plan on starting on January 6, 2014.

Please send me a PM if you have any special requests or needs related to your character.  The Computer is feeling...generous...today.

Re: New players

In an RTJ, please include:

MANDATORY:
1) Gender

OPTIONAL (not guaranteed to get these):
2) First name and last initial (if you want).
3) Memberships (if you really have a preference; otherwise, I will choose)
4) If you want to roll up your own character (or create any particular parts of your character)

5) Any other requests or recommendations -- Tics, etc.

There will be some individualization for all characters, which will probably include your chosen tics.  But we will get to that later.

Re: New players

I think we have enough people that we are going to be a solid GO on this game.  I'll be out for a week for the holidays, but I'll see where we stand when I get back.

Re: New players

I'll be getting things ready over the next week for the reboot.  Coming back to work after vacation just means I have more piles of work to catch up on, but once I see the light at the end of the tunnel, I'll be getting us going here.  If you have any friends who would like to play, I could probably add one or two more without any balance issues.  (I usually overcompensate for one or two people dropping out, but if you guys all stick with the game, there should not be any problems.)

The game will go like this:  We will begin by more roleplaying as you get used to the game, and I will introduce the peculiar rules to you as we go.  This should ease newcomers into the rules as the story progresses.  Then after the first adventure, we will get to some of the really unique and fun to play rules like accusations of treason.

Re: New players

I will be assigning mandatory bonus duties first.  Those who are returning players will keep the same bonus duties unless they request otherwise.

For everyone else, please read the descriptions here and let me know what your preference is:  link to a message in "Paranoia: They Really Are All Out to Get You"

Note that I need one person for every duty before I start having multiple people on the same duty, so you might not get your first choice.  For that reason, feel free to tell me your second choice too.

Also, please tell me if you want male or female and what specific name you want (or anything I assign).

Once I figure out people's names and genders, I will officially add the new players from their RTJ.

Re: New players

Everyone, please reread the following short thread to remind yourselves of some of the basic goals and rules.  These are the things that are sort of unique to Paranoia, though we won't be doing the traitor part just yet.

So you should understand:

Skills and what they are.
That you roll a d20 and roll the number or LESS to succeed
What perversity points are and how you can use them

link to a message in "Paranoia: They Really Are All Out to Get You"

You should also reread this thread to remember what Mandatory Bonus Duties are and how they work:  link to a message in "Paranoia: They Really Are All Out to Get You"

(It helps to understand what other people's duties are too, as this is part of their motivation/role in the adventure.)

The first post here describes some basic equipment you may encounter:  link to a message in "Paranoia: They Really Are All Out to Get You"

More detailed descriptions of SKILLS are here:  link to a message in "Paranoia: They Really Are All Out to Get You"

Don't worry:  the exact number for each of your skills will be assigned to you.

If you go over those basic rules and descriptions, I think we will be basically on the same page.

I will be assigning characters probably on Friday if I can.  (This part takes the most time, so the Computer thanks you for your patience.)

Re: New players

Final characters are being assigned now.  If you don't have a character, then I am waiting on something from you.

Rob will remain Rob. :)

I am waiting for final affirmation or declination from the last few players from the old game to give them a chance to join before we start.  I can take up to about 2 more before the game will feel overloaded.  We have 6 now.

Once the game gets started, try to post at least once a day, weekends excepted.  I tend to move along as fast as I feel the game can move without leaving anyone behind.
