Reginald:
If Florence has no skills to speak of, how did she get on the crew roster? Or does she have a skill(s) that Reggie would not have knowledge of?
She doesn't have
no skill. She has a few, just far from the level of people with 20+ years of experience. That doesn't mean she can't do anything. I'm not asking for her to do anything in place of one of you. I'm not saying she should pilot the ship, or take care of the passengers once on-board, deal with the ship's cargo or anything. Im not saying she should do something important.
But having a simple conversation doesn't need skills. And the idea I had and that was shot down would have allowed me to have something to do, to develop skills that would eventually be useful, while promoting a lot of interactions (she'd have stumbled on quite a few problems, and would have needed to ask for tips / help from pretty much every member of the crew).
She'd have been something more than just a spectator.
That's also why I suggested taking care or purchasing some kind of uniforms for the crew: it's useful, it doesn't need skills. At least at the beginning, for the negotiation,
etc. She'd probably have asked Horace.
Little things that are useful, don't need skills at the beginning, but still allow me to do something. But if even those are shot down, what am I supposed to do?
And there are of course things about her that no one is aware of, yet.
Horace Wymp:
Her father served on the ship, she asked as a favor if she could serve, we were willing to hire her and teach her, she had other ideas.
It was the grandfather.
And she never refused to be taught anything. I was perfectly fine (and so is she), to learn besides Horace among others, to follow him, observe,
etc. I'm pretty sure I never said otherwise, and if I let anyone believe that it was a mistake.
What I wanted was to be able, as a player, to do more than just have Florence eternally passive. Hence that idea to develop a side trade: she'd have been active with her thing, it wouldn't have been a detriment to the ship, and would have allowed me to do something while she interacted with lots of people, on the crew or not. But the idea was never to replace the learning from the crew with this. It was to
apply those lessons and come back with even more questions / problems.
