I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Every-so-often, I get questions about how Cohorts, and NPCs get experience, and what sort of treasure they should get. Where treasure is concerned, it is complicated and there is no standard method of allocation (even between PCs) suggested in the rules. It gets even more complicated, in this game, because we have PCs, Cohorts, Minor Cohorts and entourages (of various types) to worry about.
Experience
This is the system that I use for allocating experience.
- PCs get full experience for adventuring, roleplaying and story awards. Because I can’t be bothered to work out complex formulae - I award Cohorts full XP, until they reach their level limit - then they don’t get any more XP until they are allowed to advance.
- Secondary Characters - Major NPCs, ie PCs that I take over in the middle of an adventure, a player’s secondary character (there are a few around still) or Entourages (with PC or prestige classes) who can benefit from XP, get half XP - if they are adventuring with the PCs main character. However, if they are adventuring without the PCs main character, they get full XP. In both cases, they get full RP XP (again, unless there is a level limit in place. All Secondary Characters can gain XP from buildings and businesses assigned to them – BUT at the cost of XP that the main PC would normally gain.
- This is intended to keep players main characters as the ‘stars of the show’, while still rewarding good plat with their secondary characters.
I have a Spreadsheet that lets me track XP for the 40 (or so) characters who can benefit from it – and the only complicated bit is working out the Campaign XP, which I allocate after every Campaign Round.
At the moment Jensen, Barbatius and Socha are at their level limit, while Gabriel is collecting Campaign XP. Entourage Allies and Cousins collect Campaign XP, RP XP and some ‘Fuzzy’ XP based on responsibilities handed out to them.
Treasure
Treasure is a bit different – as treasure distribution is always down to the party. However, I always recommend the following guidelines.
PCs get a full share of the treasure, while NPCs get a half share.
Cohorts travelling with their ‘patron PC’ do not get any treasure – it is down to the patron to equip their Cohort, in the same way as an Animal Companion or Familiar doesn’t get a share of the treasure. However, as a player, I have always tried to make sure that Cohorts get the minor items that PCs don’t want - and often give my hand-me-down items to the cohorts of NPCs who have travelled with us. Major items still go for sale, with the proceeds distributed to the PCs.
I would suggest that you treat other secondary characters in the same way as NPCs.
Cohorts, or secondary characters, travelling without their patron PC, should, in my view, get a full share of any treasure, as they will, most likely, have played a full and independent part in the scenario.
